Genetics & Cryo-Bank
The Cryo-Bank preserves the heritable material of the HIVE-13 living collection — drone semen, queen tissue, and embryos — so that no managed pollinator line is ever truly lost. It is the insurance policy behind every breeding program and every rewilding mission the Command undertakes.
The Cryo Gamete Vault
The Cryo Gamete Vault (zone CV) is one of the core HIVE-13 facility zones —
a hardened, sub-grade cryogenic bank holding the reproductive material of the entire managed
collection. Drone semen is collected and vitrified by line; queen ovarian and spermathecal
tissue is banked for somatic and germline recovery; and viable embryos are held for the
most fragile founder lines. Every sample is logged against its source colony and its place
in the Index.
The Vault is engineered for redundancy first. Material is split across independent dewar banks on separate liquid-nitrogen feeds, with a mirrored cold store at a second site so no single failure can erase a line. Temperature, fill level, and seal integrity stream over NectarNet to the Comb Data Fabric; a breach in any bank trips an alarm before sample viability is at risk. Its purpose is plain: when a wild population collapses or a managed line crashes, the Vault is what lets the Command put that pollinator back into the world.
Cryo Storage
Vitrified drone semen, queen tissue, and embryos held in redundant liquid-nitrogen dewar banks at −196 °C. Split across two sites with continuous fill, seal, and temperature telemetry — designed so no single failure can destroy a line.
Founder Registry
The authoritative ledger of every managed founder line: provenance, founding cohort, generation depth, and current status. Each entry is keyed to the Index and to its active breeding program.
Genetic Rescue
The protocol that turns banked material into living colonies — thaw, insemination, and rearing to re-establish a collapsed line or boost the diversity of a dwindling wild population. The end of the chain that begins in the Vault.
Founder Lines & Lineage
The Founder Registry tracks the managed lines whose germline is banked in the Vault. Each
carries a research-log line ID (HV-RL-2091-0xx), ties back to its specimen record
in the Index, and feeds the active
breeding rotation that keeps it alive outside the freezer.
| Line ID | Species / line | Founders | Generation | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
HV-RL-2091-041 |
European honeybee — Honeyfield Resilient | 24 queens / 60 drone sources | F12 | Active |
HV-RL-2091-047 |
Buff-tailed bumblebee — Corridor stock | 18 queens / 40 drone sources | F7 | Active |
HV-RL-2091-052 |
Mason bee — Orchard founder | 30 founder females | F9 | Expanding |
HV-RL-2091-058 |
European hornet — managed apex line | 9 queens / 16 drone sources | F4 | Bottlenecked |
HV-RL-2091-063 |
Leafcutter bee — Arid restoration | 22 founder females | F6 | Active |
HV-RL-2091-071 |
Carniolan honeybee — Heritage reserve | 11 queens / 28 drone sources | F3 | Banked / dormant |
Lineage is never read from the freezer alone. A line's pedigree, crossing history, and field performance live in the Index; the rotation that maintains diversity and replaces aging founders is run out of Breeding & Rearing. The Vault is the long-term backup, not the working population.
Genetic Integrity & Diversity
Keep the lines wide
Honeybees are acutely vulnerable to inbreeding through the single-locus sex-determination system — diploid drones are a dead loss to a colony. Every managed cross is checked against the Registry for shared ancestry, and the Vault deliberately banks unrelated drone sources so a thinning line can be re-broadened without importing unknown stock.
Allelic floors
Each active founder line carries a minimum effective-population and sex-allele target;
a line that drops below floor (see HV-RL-2091-058) is flagged
Bottlenecked and prioritized for genetic rescue from banked
material before it can be returned to general breeding.
