Anaphylaxis & Sting Medical Response

Purpose
To govern the immediate medical response to bee and hornet stings and to systemic allergic reactions across all HIVE-13 sites. The procedure ensures rapid recognition of anaphylaxis, correct adrenaline administration, and escalation to emergency services.
Scope
All sting and allergic-reaction events involving staff or visitors on site.
In scope:
- Recognition of local and systemic sting reactions
- Adrenaline auto-injector administration
- Escalation to emergency medical services
- Post-event monitoring and reporting
Out of scope:
- Venom collection operations, which follow Venom & Apitoxin Extraction
- Containment breach response, which follows HCL-4 Hornet Vault Access & Containment
Definitions
Anaphylaxis
A severe, rapid-onset systemic allergic reaction that is immediately life-threatening.
Auto-Injector
A pre-dosed adrenaline device for emergency intramuscular administration.
Biphasic Reaction
A recurrence of anaphylaxis hours after apparent recovery, requiring continued observation.
Responsibilities
Site Safety Officer (Owner)
Owns the procedure, maintains auto-injector stock, and trains all field staff.
First Responder
Recognises reactions, administers adrenaline, and summons emergency services.
Apiary Husbandry Lead
Ensures every field team carries a stocked, in-date sting kit.
Procedure
Recognition
- Assess the casualty for airway, breathing, and circulation compromise.
- Identify systemic signs such as widespread hives, swelling, or collapse.
- Treat any systemic involvement as anaphylaxis without delay.
Treatment
- Administer the adrenaline auto-injector into the outer thigh.
- Call emergency services and lay the casualty flat with legs raised.
- Give a second dose after five minutes if no improvement.
- Remove stingers by scraping and keep the casualty still.
Aftercare
- Monitor continuously for biphasic reaction until handover.
- Hand over to emergency services with a timeline of doses given.
- Restock the kit and file the incident report before close of day.
