Facilities & the HIVE-13 Site
Facilities is the directorate that holds the ground HIVE-13 stands on: the apiary grids and containment cells, the venom and cryo labs, the Hornet Vault, the power and climate plant, and the biosecurity zoning that decides who may stand where. Every other department borrows the floor this directorate keeps.
Facility Zones
The HIVE-13 site is partitioned into biosecurity zones, each carrying a containment tier from T1 (open) to T4 (Hornet Vault, restricted). The live floor view — occupancy, seals, and interlocks — runs on the interactive facility map.

| Zone | Name | Tier | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
CC |
Hive Command Core (MELISSA) | T1 | Command floor, MELISSA core, and directorate coordination. |
GA |
Apiary Grid A · Production | T1 | Open production apiary — HCL-1 colonies, honey and yield. |
GB |
Apiary Grid B · Production | T1 | Open production apiary — second production grid. |
GC |
Apiary Grid C · Breeding | T2 | Queen rearing, splits, and breeding-line husbandry. |
BF |
Butterfly Conservatory | T1 | Climate-held conservatory for butterflies and moths. |
VL |
Venom Extraction Lab | T3 | Apitoxin draws and venom research — two-person rule. |
HV |
Hornet Vault (Restricted) | T4 | HCL-4 containment. Director-authorized, two-person entry. |
QT |
Quarantine & Triage | T2 | Isolation cells, disease response, and HCL-escalation triage. |
CV |
Cryo Gamete Vault | T3 | Cryogenic gamete and genebank storage under seal. |
SB |
Swarm Bay & Drone Hangar | T2 | Forager and Hornet-class craft, mobile apiary units. |
NC |
NectarNet Mesh Control | T1 | Sensing-mesh control and Comb Data Fabric backbone. |
DD |
Field Dispatch Bay | T2 | Crew launch, staging, and field handover for dispatch. |
Biosecurity Zoning
Tiers run T1 (open) through T4 (restricted) and map directly onto the Hive Containment Level framework: the higher the tier, the tighter the seal, the access control, and the entry rule. Zoning is doctrine, not signage — seals and interlocks are enforced by the floor, and procedure lives in the SOP library.
Open Floor (HCL-1)
Production apiary grids, the conservatory, command core, and mesh control. Benign pollinators, standard PPE, and free movement for badged staff. Most of the site is T1.
Controlled (HCL-2)
Breeding, triage, swarm bay, and dispatch. Veiled handling, sting protocol on file, and badge-gated entry. Defensive colonies and staged craft live behind the first seal.
Contained (HCL-3)
Venom lab and cryo gamete vault. Two-person rule, antivenom staged, and logged entry. Dangerous or venomous lines and irreplaceable material are sealed and monitored.
Restricted (HCL-4)
The Hornet Vault alone. Existential handling hazard — Director-only authorization, logged two-person entry, and full doctrine before any seal is broken. See the charter HCL framework.
Procedure & Sign-off
Every tier crossing is a procedure. Entry rules, seal checks, and escalation handling are owned in the SOP library and aligned to the containment framework.
Live Zoning View
The facility map renders current zone state — occupancy, seal status, and interlocks — so the floor team always knows which tier is open and which is locked down.
Utilities & Maintenance
Facilities runs the plant that keeps the site alive: power, climate, water, and the comms fabric that carries every byte of telemetry. Maintenance cadence and live status below.
| System | Provision | Maintenance cadence | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | Primary grid feed with on-site reserve; sealed-zone failover priority. | Quarterly load test · annual transfer-switch drill. | Nominal |
| Climate | Per-zone HVAC and humidity hold for conservatory, labs, and cryo. | Monthly filter & setpoint check. | Nominal |
| Water | Potable, apiary feed-water, and lab-grade supply with backflow isolation. | Quarterly potability assay · biannual line flush. | Nominal |
| Comms | Comb Data Fabric mesh backbone — self-healing, no single point of failure. | Continuous health-poll · annual node audit. | Self-healing |
| Cryo Plant | Cryogenic chain for the gamete vault with redundant compressors. | Weekly boil-off check · quarterly compressor service. | Nominal |
| Containment Seals | Zone interlocks and seals for T2–T4, with HV under independent control. | Monthly seal-integrity test · pre-entry verification. | Monitored |
